Mount Madonna County Park Eucalyptus Project

Project Partners

Santa Clara County Parks
CAL FIRE

Overview of Actions

Portions of the Mount Madonna County Park area that were historically conifer-hardwood redwood forests have been overtaken by eucalyptus. Santa Clara County Parks and CAL FIRE identified various locations within the park that would benefit from the invasive exotic species removal for forest health fuels reduction or where roadside fuel breaks were deemed critical for fire protection and hazard tree reduction.

ARC Forestry developed treatment specifications for contractors, conducted bid tours, evaluated bids, supported contractor selection, developed ARC Field Maps for operations, conducted project layout and tree marking, and supervised treatment implementation, including winter period monitoring.

These efforts supported the removal of 1,000’s of small and large eucalyptus trees that were treated with targeted herbicide application. This large-scale eucalyptus project resulted in copious amounts of biomass to process – a decision in which ARC Forestry and project partners grappled with. Diameter breaks, equipment capacity, and chip-depth specifications drove the split for which trees would be chipped in place and which would be hauled to a landing to be processed at a later time.

Treatment Status

Approximately 30 acres of eucalyptus and roadside fuel reduction identified as a major location to manage fire and facilitate ingress and egress completed.
